The NBA legend’s logo is a nod to his father, but it also represents the journeyman center as someone who stays true to himself regardless of circumstance.
Shaquille O’Neal’s famous “Dunkman” logo stems from his father’s harsh words and a journeyman center. The logo, which is the first in NBA history, was created by a company called “Shaq shoes”.
Shaquille O’Neal created a name for himself by delivering ferocious finishes and unleashing unrivaled fury on rims and backboards throughout the nation, not to mention opposing big men. The famed “Dunkman” logo was born from his strong technique and two-handed, legs-up hang on the rim. But it wouldn’t have been “Dunkman” if it hadn’t been for the Sarge… and Rony Seikaly.
Despite his big physical bulk, Shaq used to think of himself as a skilled rim protector. However, in response to his stepfather’s expectations, he adjusted his manner and went to Seikaly for guidance on how to finish with authority.
The “Dunkman” emblem of Shaquille O’Neal is one of the most well-known in shoe history.
Shaquille O’Neal had a hefty deal with Reebok when he first entered the NBA, but that wasn’t the reason his sneakers became so well-known.
O’Neal signed many signature shoes with Reebok, but he left following a confrontation with a lady who complained about the shoes’ pricing. Under the guise of creating a cheap shoe, he started his own Shaq brand.
Years later, O’Neal’s decision to go out on his own looks to have paid off handsomely. In 2016, he claimed that the Shaq line at Walmart had sold over 120 million pairs.
The “Dunkman” emblem is the most renowned component of the shoe line, and given the opposing styles of O’Neal and Michael Jordan, it might almost be considered as the yin to “Jumpman’s” yang. Shaq’s domination on the court was portrayed by the logo.
That design would not have existed if it hadn’t been for a serious admonition from The Diesel’s stepfather, an NBA center who was born in Lebanon.
After his stepfather advised him to quit playing like a guard, O’Neal adopted Rony Seikaly’s approach.

When the ball was near to the rim, Shaq learnt the hard way not to goof around.
On the All The Smoke podcast, O’Neal said that he was chastised by his stepfather, Phillip Harrison, after attempting a finger roll during a high school game. Harrison stepped on the floor and grabbed O’Neal to the side, encouraging him to play like Shaquille O’Neal and not Magic Johnson, according to Shaq (h/t Syracuse.com).
O’Neal was filled with wrath as a result of Harrison’s statements. He wanted to convey his stepfather his own message. Rony Seikaly, a former Syracuse and NBA center, would help him with his creativity.
“So I’d go home, and he’d force me to watch college sports, and I’d be watching Syracuse play.” Rony Seikaly dunks it after Sherman Douglas tosses it to him, but he’s still getting his legs up. OK, I said. So my father was there the following game, and I was dunking and getting my legs up. What I took away from it was that people began (hunching over). ‘Ahh, OK,’ I replied. ‘I received something there,’ says the narrator. That’s when I began dominating and dunking, dunking, dunking.”

Seikaly had an illustrious career. He spent 11 seasons in the NBA, averaging 14.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while winning the Most Improved Player Award in 1989-90. To be sure, that’s a strong CV. Despite this, there’s a sense of humour in the modest Seikaly being partially responsible for a famous symbol like the “Dunkman.”
Shaq and Seikaly, it turns out, had a lot more in common than how they finished at the rim.
Both Shaq and Seikaly have started composing songs.
Is Shaq emulating Seikaly’s style now that he’s retired?
Aside from his career as an entrepreneur and his appearance on Inside the NBA, O’Neal can be seen traversing the nation and dialing in work. His DJ sets have risen in popularity lately, albeit Seikaly may have been the first to do so.
In Miami, where he spent six seasons with the Heat, Seikaly’s shift to creating dance music made him a legend. He is still one of the most well-known DJs in the country, and he performs all over the world.
Shaq should consider touring with Seikaly. Seikaly is the idea for the two-handed Shaq thunder jams that gave rise to the “Dunkman” logo, therefore he could owe his DJ counterpart royalties.
During a Rick Fox interview, Shaquille O’Neal christened a Lakers media day by dropping his pants and showing reporters the full moon.
Shaquille O’Neal’s famous “Dunkman” logo stems from his father’s harsh words and a journeyman center. His father once said, “You’ll never make it in this league.” With the help of his mentor, Shaq was able to prove him wrong and become one of the best players in NBA history.
